Meaney and Rennert shot this film in January 2005, and it was completed in August 2005. It is heavily influenced by the style of Hong Kong director Wong Kar-Wai, as well as indie genre movies like Garden State.

Ricky Frost was originally much longer, with a sixty page shooting script, of which roughly thirty pages were actually filmed. Most of the stuff that was not filmed involved Ricky and Donovan. They originally were friends as well and had a bunch of scenes together. Also, there was a subplot about Donovan at work, and a couple of dream sequence type things.
